1. Natural Bridges National Monument, Utah, USA

If you’re looking for a star-gazing destination amidst the coolest rock formations, you want to visit Lake Powell. Since it was the first to be certified as an International Dark Sky Park, it clearly has epic night sky potential. The International Dark Sky Association is a leading organization combating light pollution across the world and they certify places that earn the dark title. The natural rock bridge creates a frame with the Milky Way as the painting.

6. Goodleaf Treetop Camping, Isle Of Wight

If you thrive off of forest bathing, try forest sleeping. Snooze high up in the treetops of a fairytale forest in the Isle of Wight. After a tree-climbing lesson, dinner at a local pub, and a drink by the campfire, you’ll be ready to climb to your hammock as the night owls sing you to sleep.

7. Karostas Cietums Prison, Latvia

An overnight stay at this prison hotel is not suitable if you’re afraid of the dark but, if being locked up in an iron-clad jail cell wins over a king-size bed at the Ritz, reserve your shackles now. Built as an infirmary in the 1900s, it became a Nazi and Soviet jail during the World Wars. Insert yourself inside a real-life horror story as you try and sleep inside its haunted walls.

11. La Fortuna, Costa Rica

There are many delightfully dark secrets in this tropical jungle destination. La Fortuna is close to the equator and in a special position to view both the northern and southern constellations. It’s also one of the rare spots above the equator where you can see the Magellanic Clouds, two irregular dwarf galaxies that orbit the Milky Way. You have the best chance of spotting them during the dry season from December to April.

12. Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada

Due to its extremely northern location, Iqaluit has short daylight hours, making it a haven for night owls who thrive when it’s dark.
