20 Tips For Parents Traveling With A Baby

Travelling is already stressful enough as it is. Now add a baby to the mix and you've got yourself quite the handful. That being said, having a small child shouldn’t be a determent to travelling the world or simply taking a trip to visit loved ones. With the right mindset and careful preparation, travelling with a baby can be a lot easier than it sounds. So with that, here are 20 tips for parents travelling with a baby.

1. Plan Ahead

Planning ahead is sound advice regardless of whether or not you have a baby in tow — but it's even more important if you do! Make sure you do your due diligence and research your destination, accommodations, and even airline to see just how baby-friendly they are. Amenities like cribs, high chairs, and nearby medical facilities are crucial, so be on the lookout for these when planning your trip.

2. Pack Smart

Packing with a baby is basically regular packing on hard mode — so be sure you’re adequately prepared. Make a thorough list of essentials to pack that include things like diapers, wipes, clothes, formula, and even toys. Always have extras in case things don’t go as planned, and keep these essentials in a small, easily accessible bag for quick diaper changes and feedings.

3. Choose Direct Flights

Layovers might be the cheaper option, but they won’t be worth it in the long run with a baby in tow. If possible, always opt for direct flights. In doing so, you’re not only affording yourself a less stressful experience but also minimizing travel time and the risk of losing luggage.

4. Bring a Stroller and Carrier

Strollers and carriers are a godsend for parents, and this is doubly true when travelling. A lightweight collapsable stroller gives your baby a comfortable place to nap and rest, while a carrier will allow you to keep your hands free. Both are indispensable options when it comes to navigating areas with high foot traffic like airports and sightseeing destinations.

5. Stick to a Routine

As a parent, you’re no doubt aware that babies are creatures of habit. They’re not fond of change and are most comfortable in their established daily routines. So do your best to adhere to your baby’s regular sleep and feeding schedules as much as possible if you want to ensure ultimate comfort and stability.

6. Pack Snacks and Formula

Having a hangry baby meltdown is the last thing you need in your life. Staying on top of meeting your baby’s dietary needs and preferences is crucial, so be sure to bring an ample supply. There’s no reason you should be scrambling to find food at the airport or a nearby supermarket, unless you know for sure they will have your baby’s preferred snacks, formula, and baby food.

7. Book Extra Seats

Budget permitting, booking an extra seat for your baby is a great way to afford you a little more comfort and space during your trek. This is especially true for long-haul flights when space and comfort are a scarce commodity.  If price is a concern, it may be worth checking with your airline, as some offer discounted rates for infant seats.

8. Keep Baby Entertained

An unoccupied baby can easily turn into a fussy baby. The antidote: toys, books, activities, games, and whatever else you can think of! Having a good mix of familiar items can help soothe your baby and keep them distracted when you’re running around or in need of some well-earned relaxation.

9. Dress in Layers

Depending on where you’re travelling, your baby is likely to experience a series of temperature changes that can quickly become unbearable if they’re not wearing the right clothing. Dressing your baby in layers allows you to easily adjust on the fly. Ensure the utmost comfort by opting for clothes that are breathable and easy to put on and remove.

10. Check Baby Gear Policies

There’s nothing worse than a last-minute surprise just when you thought you had it all figured out. The only way to avoid this is to thoroughly research your airline and its respective policy regarding strollers, car seats, and other gear like bassinets. Some airlines even go as far as offering free check-in for items like strollers, so always be sure to do some research before booking your flight.

11. Use a Travel Crib

Although it requires some extra effort, a travel crib is an invaluable tool when travelling with a baby. This is particularly true if your hotel or rental doesn’t have adequate sleeping arrangements for an infant. A travel crib can also serve as a playpen or just a secure space for you baby when needed.

12. Protect Against Germs

We all know how prone we are to getting sick or feeling run down after a trip, and babies are no exception. High-density areas like planes and airports can be hotbeds for germs and disease, so take some time to keep your baby’s environment as clean as possible. Surfaces like armrests and trays should be wiped down before use, and handwashing is crucial.

13. Prepare for Security Checks

No one likes going through security at the airport, and matters are made even worse with a baby. Although families generally have their own lines, it’s still important that you stay on top of things to ensure a smooth and seamless experience. Be sure to pack any liquids, baby food, or formula in clear, easy-to-remove bags and try to familiarize yourself with any relevant TSA guidelines.

14. Communicate with Your Partner

If travelling with your partner, be sure to adequately communicate and share responsibilities. Ultimately, the trek you’re about to embark on will be a team effort, and the two of you need to work towards supporting each other. Tasks like feeding, changing, and entertaining should be divided equally if you want to avoid incurring severe burnout.

15. Take Breaks

Breaks are a necessary component of any difficult undertaking — especially travelling with a baby! Breaks are a great way to avoid crankiness (for both you and the baby), as they allow for all parties to rest and regroup. Breaks are also crucial when driving since they afford you and your baby a chance to stretch and move around.

16. Opt for Baby-Friendly Accommodation

Finding the right accommodations can make all the difference in the world. There are many hotels and rentals that cater to families with small children, and these places offer features that will make your trip a lot more relaxing and comfortable. Invaluable amenities like cribs, high chairs, in-suite kitchens, and babysitting services will provide you with the comforts you need to have a stellar trip.

17. Stay Calm and Flexible

Travelling in general, let alone with an infant, can be a stressful and unpredictable endeavour. You never know what obstacles and inconveniences might come your way, so the best thing you can do is stay calm and flexible. Your stress can easily make things worse and rub off on your baby, so always take extra measures to remain patient and positive no matter what happens.

18. Secure Travel Insurance

Travel insurance for both you and your baby is necessary if you want to ensure ultimate peace of mind. On the off chance that some kind of accident or illness does occur while on your trip, you’ll be comfortable knowing that you won’t have to pay exorbitant medical fees just to get the care and treatment you need.

19. Prepare for Different Time Zones

If you think time zone changes for adults are bad, imagine what they can do to a baby. To minimize jet lag and make the transition as smooth as possible, you should take some time before the trip to gradually adjust your baby’s schedule to match your destination. Additionally, naps and extra rest while on the trip are a great way to stay refreshed despite the aggressive time change.

20. Capture the Memories

Last but not least: be sure to take plenty of photos and videos while on your travels. This a big undertaking for you and your family and the least you can do is have some awesome memories to show for it. Your baby’s first trip is a monumental time that you’ll look back on for years to come, so be sure to document as much of it as you can.
